Octopus Energy complaint: what you can claim
Every energy supplier in Great Britain, including Octopus Energy, must pay you a fixed amount when it misses one of Ofgem's Guaranteed Standards, and cannot bill you for energy used more than 12 months ago in most cases.

Old bills
Your supplier cannot charge you for energy you used more than 12 months ago if it did not send you an accurate bill for it, unless you stopped it reading the meter, ignored requests to pay, or took energy illegally.

Prepayment meters
A supplier must not force a prepayment meter on a home where everyone is 75 or over, where there is a child under 2, or where the supply is needed for health reasons. It must first try to contact you at least 10 times and carry out a welfare visit, and it must add £30 of credit to each forced meter.
Official source, checked 11 September 2026People who had a prepayment meter forced on them between 1 January 2022 and 31 January 2023 were covered by a compensation scheme of £250, £500 or £1,000 depending on the case.
